Assistant Vice President, Finance

Title: Assistant Vice President, Finance

Location: Junior Achievement of Central Ohio Learning Center of Columbus (Columbus, OH)

Status: Full-time, Leadership Team

Work Environment: In office, some flexibility

Reports to: President

Direct Reports: Finance and Accounting Team (currently one member)

Job Summary: The Assistant Vice President, Finance (AVP) is a key member of the Leadership Team, responsible for leading the financial operations and reporting of Junior Achievement of Central Ohio. This role partners closely with the CFO consultant and the JA Leadership Team to shape and execute financial policies, ensure fiscal sustainability, and partner on strategic initiatives that support the organization’s mission. The AVP of Finance will oversee all financial functions, including managing other finance staff, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and risk management, while also serving as a strategic advisor in the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Direct all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and donor revenue recognition
  • Lead the development of long-term financial strategies so they are aligned with organizational goals
  • Advise the CFO consultant, President, and Board on financial planning and risk management
  • Drive financial modeling and scenario planning to support strategic decision-making
  • Oversee the preparation and presentation of financial reports to the Board of Directors, Operations Committee, and external stakeholders
  • Ensure transparency and accuracy in financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements
  • Lead the development of executive dashboards and performance metrics
  • Ensure robust internal controls and compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and nonprofit financial standards
  • Oversee cash flow management, banking relationships, and investment oversight
  • Lead the annual audit process and ensure timely and accurate tax filings (Form 990, 5500)
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and regulatory agencies
  • Manage and mentor the finance and accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement
  • Build cross-functional collaboration with development, HR, and education teams to align financial goals
  • Provide strategic oversight of grant budgets, financial reporting, and compliance
  • Review and approve contracts to mitigate financial and legal risk
  • Serve as a key presenter to the Operations Committee and Board of Directors
  • Prepare and deliver financial presentations, strategic updates, and risk assessments

You have the following experience (at a minimum):

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, a CPA is important but not required
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in public accounting, with Not for Profit GAAP knowledge
  • Proven track record in accounting / financial reporting
  • Cross-functional collaboration

You have the following attributes and interpersonal skills:

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial data for diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change, improve processes, and drive organizational impact

Preferred technical skills (Plus but not a must):

  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Excel, and financial reporting tools
  • Expertise in nonprofit accounting, grant management, and compliance
  • Strategic financial planning
  • Management experience or potential
