Custodian/Maintenance

Job Description

Reports To: Superintendent/Designee
Employment Status: Full Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
General Description: In addition to regular custodial duties, shall be involved in the planning and overseeing of the maintenance and custodial operation of the building and grounds.
Qualifications:
  • Valid driver's license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; or experience as a school custodian or equivalent; basic techniques of electrical repair, maintenance, carpentry, and grounds maintenance.
  • Demonstrates ability to organize, able to perform minor repairs, and a willingness to work with others.
  • Knowledge about building codes, accessibility guidelines, safety regulations, and environmental laws.
  • Truck is preferred but not required.
  • Computer skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of HVAC controls and operating systems.
  • Available to respond to building and/or service emergencies.
  • Maintains an acceptable attendance record and is punctual.
Essential Functions:
  • Strives to promote the safety, health, and comfort of the students and employees.
  • Keeps inventory records of janitor equipment and supplies so as to assist in reordering.
  • Makes requisitions for supplies and equipment.
  • Performs custodial duties. Provides for the regular and orderly removal of trash.
  • Serves on the GCESC Safety Committee and Facilities Committee. Ensures that building is in compliance in all areas.
  • Sweeps, scrubs, and waxes floors, cleans carpets.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork.
  • Replenishes supplies in restrooms.
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles.
  • Keeps windows clean.
  • Assists in moving, storing, and arranging furniture, equipment, and all supplies.
  • Closes and checks the building each day; turns out lights and locks doors and windows.
  • Maintains equipment and materials used in this work, i.e., electrical systems, heating and cooling systems.
  • Replaces ballast and light bulbs as needed.
  • Serves as the first contact in making minor repairs to the building, furniture, equipment, and so forth, and reports the need for other repairs to Superintendent/Designee.
  • Cleans walks and as needed; snow and ice removal.
  • Cleans thoroughly and makes more extensive repairs to the building during the summer under the supervision of the Superintendent/Designee.
  • Repairs damaged walls and repaints as needed.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of the heating/cooling system and monitors the operation of the system.
  • Brings to the attention of the Superintendent/Designee, duties and problems that cannot be taken care of by the custodian under his normal duties.
  • Assists lunchroom staff and removes garbage and trash from the lunchroom.
  • Completes all assigned classes through Public School Works.
  • Works cooperatively with staff.
  • Maintains a positive and courteous attitude when dealing with others.
  • Completes reports and forms as required.
  • Responds to calls related to building security or other emergencies whenever possible and if unable to do so, relays such calls to the Superintendent/Designee or other appropriate person.
  • Subscribes to the annual evaluation procedures.
  • Deliver large items to remote classrooms.
  • Complies with safety regulations and environmental laws. Ensures that custodial supplies are labeled and stored safely.
  • Participates in staff meetings and professional growth activities as directed.
