Are you interested in sampling, inspection, and testing of materials that are used in construction and maintenance projects? The Iowa Department of Transportation's District 1 Materials Office is seeking a Highway Technician Senior. In this role, you’ll monitor aggregate production in District 1, a 12-county area in Central Iowa. Duties also include winter operations, backing up the Grimes Maintenance Shop during snow and ice events, all while living out Iowa DOT’s mission of Making Lives Better Through Transportation through the agency’s core values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception.
Location: Grimes Resident Construction Engineer Office, 2320 SE 17th St. Grimes, IA 50111
Shift: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Monday through Friday. Hours are flexible and will vary depending on needs, the position is subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions.
This position will be responsible for monitoring aggregate producers in and around Polk County, which includes, but not limited to:
Position must be able to interpret specifications, instructional memorandums, and contract documents. Records keeping and retrieval rely heavily on computer and iPad use with various databases, Excel, and web apps.
Special Requirements:
Entry-level driver Training is available upon hire through the Iowa DOT. The multifaceted training will help meet all state and federal regulations.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to four years of fulltime work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
2) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of post-high-school education in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing equals one year of full-time experience.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twenty-four months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate.
