The Unclaimed Property Division of the Kansas State Treasurer’s Office is responsible for reuniting rightful owners and heirs with unclaimed assets currently being held by the State of Kansas.

Position Overview

The Kansas State Treasurer’s Office is seeking a detail-oriented and organized professional to support our Unclaimed Property program. This role serves as a key point of contact for owners and heirs of unclaimed property. Candidates must ensure compliance with laws, accuracy, and effective communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

60% - Customer Service/Administrative

  • Communicate effectively with potential owners by telephone, in writing, and in person to provide or clarify information, explain claims procedures, or to obtain additional information necessary to process a claim.
  • Perform general administrative duties including:
    • Responding to in-bound calls.
    • Data entry of incoming claims
    • Scanning
    • Research
    • Payment processing
    • Maintenance of filing and records systems
    • Composing written correspondence.

30% - Claims Processing

  • Receive Unclaimed Property (UP) claims submitted by potential owners of the property and review for accuracy and completeness.
  • Review, process and approve claims based upon established policies and procedures utilizing independent judgement.
  • Maintain required security and confidentiality of owner, claimant and holder information.

5% - Event Participation

  • Participate in UP events including but not limited to the Kansas State Fair, telethons and events for various clubs and organizations where claimants may request UP searches. Occasionally, events may require travel and some overnight stays.

5% - Other Duties

  • Other duties as assigned or deemed necessary by the Director or Deputy Director of Unclaimed Property or agency leadership.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year experience in general office, clerical and administrative support work.

(Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of or direct work experience in claims processing in an office environment.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of Windows operating system, spreadsheet applications and word processing applications.
  • Must be able to operate personal computer, laptop and office equipment including scanner/printer/fax.
  • Must be able to learn, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to Unclaimed Property.
