Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to clean offices and maintain the upkeep of bathrooms, floors, and hallways. This is accomplished by vacuuming floors; sanitizing medical offices; collecting trash and removing recycles from buildings; sweeping and mopping floors; dusting baseboards and ceiling fans; collecting and distributing cleaning supplies; driving from building to building; and performing necessary tasks in a timely and effective manner. Other duties include cleaning kitchens; scrubbing floors cleaning and sanitizing toys for visiting children; performing minor maintenance work; and working with Health Bureau on any necessary tasks.

Essential Functions

Collects trash and recyclables by pushing cart from office to office collecting trash; taking all trash to Parks building to unload and dispose of; and cleaning and removing trash and litter from the exterior of Health buildings and public bathrooms.
Vacuums by running vacuum throughout both the Health Bureau and Health Annex offices.
Cleans restrooms by using chemicals to clean toilets, floors, sinks, and mirrors in all restrooms; assisting with cleaning public restrooms; and assisting with cleaning the Park and Sanitation maintenance building.
Cleans chairs and kitchens by washing dishes; cleaning sinks; washing and wiping down chairs and tables; and mopping floors.
Dusts and washes windows by dusting tables, windows, desks and furniture; and washing/cleaning windows and any glass doors.
Lifts, collects, and distributes supplies by lifting boxes full of needed supplies; and communicating supply needs to supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.

Some knowledge of safety procedures when dealing with cleaning chemicals.

Ability to learn the operation and care of vacuum cleaner, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.

Ability to do manual cleaning and related labor and to work continuous hours while standing.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Up to six (6) months experience in routine custodial work.


Must successfully pass a background check

Must successfully pass a drug screening

Must obtain a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, dated within one year of application, indicating that “no record exists.”

Residency Requirement:All persons who shall become employed by the City shall be or become a resident of York County, or any County contiguous to York County (Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Hartford, Baltimore, and Carrol Counties), within six (6) months from the date the employee achieves permanent employment status.
