Job Description

The Electronic Systems Development Director leads advanced vehicle system design across electronic, infotainment, and autonomous domains for the North American market. This role drives next-generation electronic architectures, champions electronics quality, and guides innovation initiatives that support global product and regulatory objectives. The director oversees a large, multi-disciplinary engineering organization, spearheads cost-saving and technology roadmapping efforts, and provides clear, strategic reporting to executive leadership and key regulatory bodies.

Responsibilities

• Develop and support the Electronic Systems Development Department's vision, mission, annual work plan, and budget, ensuring alignment with short-, mid-, and long-term organizational plans.

• Establish clear goals and performance expectations for all direct reports and assign tasks and project roles consistent with North American development responsibilities.

• Oversee and direct managers and engineers responsible for automotive electronic engineering, including design issue resolution, market adaptability analysis, and early-stage concept creation.

• Lead the development of innovative vehicle electronic technologies while supporting quality objectives, advancing cost-reduction initiatives, and driving creation of long-term technology roadmaps.

• Conduct comprehensive design reviews to evaluate component and system integrity, assess countermeasure proposals, generate solutions for open issues, align implementation schedules, and monitor execution progress.

• Review technical and operational projects with engineering staff, establishing risk assessments and risk mitigation strategies to meet timing milestones and maintain high output quality.

• Provide strong technical direction and strategic engineering guidance to ensure continuous progress against departmental work plans.

• Support engineering studies, competitive benchmarking, and North American customer-focused research to inform product and technology decisions.

• Publish regular Electronic Systems Development reports summarizing weekly accomplishments and upcoming activities for stakeholders.

• Create detailed technical reports and executive-level presentations for business leadership, global R&D organizations, manufacturing teams, and external regulatory bodies such as NHTSA and IIHSA.

• Oversee and manage development activities for infotainment, autonomous systems, and electronics, including navigation, connectivity, validation, cybersecurity, electrical design, mobile applications, servers and cloud integration, driver assistance features, autonomous driving systems, and automated parking technologies.

• Participate in weekly briefings with executive management to align on strategic direction, project priorities, and resource allocation.

• Collaborate with departments such as Vehicle Evaluation, Regulation & Certification, and Product Planning by supporting testing activities, design feedback, vehicle clinics, and cross-functional initiatives.

• Build and strengthen collaboration models across electronic, infotainment, and autonomous teams, promoting shared toolchains, engineering alignment, and cross-domain innovation.

• Assist in planning, forecasting, and monitoring the department budget to ensure efficient use of resources.

• Perform administrative responsibilities including purchasing requests, timesheet approvals, vacation and travel approvals, and other operational tasks that support departmental effectiveness.

• Lead and support additional projects and strategic assignments as required by organizational needs.

• Travel domestically and internationally as needed to support development activities, collaboration with global teams, and regulatory or customer engagements.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

• At least 8 years of engineering management experience leading technical teams.

• At least 10 years of experience in the design and release of electronic structures and components, including demonstrated ability to solve complex engineering problems.

• A minimum of 5 years of software development experience, preferably in embedded or systems-level environments.

• Proven experience developing software architecture for multi-control, cross-functional systems.

• Experience with wired and wireless communication development in automotive or related domains.

• Experience with cloud services, connected vehicle systems, API ecosystems, and cybersecurity implementations.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver scalable, reliable, and secure software-centric solutions.

• Experience leading production-level ADAS and autonomous driving systems.

• Working knowledge of programming languages and embedded operating systems.

• Understanding of embedded OS-based architecture, application operation, and system-level integration.

• Knowledge of server development, maintenance, and cloud-based service interactions.

• Experience with ADAS and autonomous driving system development, including perception, sensor fusion, control algorithms, and machine learning frameworks.

• Understanding of high-performance compute platforms, real-time systems, and autonomous software validation tools.

• Analog and digital circuit design and analysis skills, including experience with SoC platforms, power controls, integrated circuits, and linear and related components.

• Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills suitable for directing a large technical organization.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• Experience in automotive electronic systems development across infotainment, connectivity, and autonomous domains.

• Experience preparing and presenting technical and executive-level reports to leadership and regulatory organizations.

• Familiarity with vehicle regulatory environments and interactions with agencies such as NHTSA and IIHSA.

• Experience building shared toolchains and processes across multiple engineering domains.

• Demonstrated success in driving cost-reduction initiatives while maintaining or improving product quality.

• Ability to manage complex project portfolios, including risk assessment, mitigation planning, and milestone tracking.

• Comfort with domestic and international travel to collaborate with global teams and partners.

Work Environment

The Electronic Systems Development Director operates in a highly collaborative, technology-driven environment focused on advanced vehicle electronics, infotainment, and autonomous systems for the North American market. The role involves leading a large, multi-disciplinary engineering organization and working closely with global R&D, manufacturing, vehicle evaluation, regulation and certification, and product planning teams. The position requires regular interaction with executive leadership through weekly briefings, as well as communication with external regulatory bodies. Work is primarily office- and lab-based, leveraging modern software development, embedded systems, and cloud technologies, along with tools for ADAS and autonomous system validation. Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Ypsilanti, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $230000.00 - $300000.00/yr.
