Position Overview
The Housing Legal Assistant, under the supervision of the Housing Court Coordinator, plays a key role in ensuring efficient case management and direct support for our housing legal services. This position will assist with day-to-day coordination, client communication, administrative tasks, and provide hands-on support during Housing Court sessions. The ideal candidate will be a reliable, organized, and mission-driven professional who is passionate about advancing housing justice for vulnerable populations.
Key Responsibilities
- Case Management & Communication: Support the Housing Court Coordinator in managing case files, maintaining client communication, and ensuring smooth tracking of housing cases.
- Administrative Support: Assist with data entry, client scheduling, and conflict checks.
- Court Support: Attend Housing Court to support attorneys with documentation, client coordination, and court logistics.
- Intern & Volunteer Coordination: Oversee law student volunteers conducting client intake and eligibility screenings; assist in training and support of volunteers and interns at Housing Court.
- Community Engagement: Participate in community outreach efforts, housing clinics, and educational events as needed.
- Other Duties: Provide flexible support as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
- Organizational Skills: Strong ability to manage multiple priorities, track deadlines, and maintain order in a fast-paced work environment.
- Communication & Advocacy: Excellent oral and written communication skills with a persuasive and professional demeanor; comfort interacting with vulnerable populations.
- Mission-Driven: A demonstrated commitment to justice and advocacy for low-income and housing-insecure clients.
- Dependability & Initiative: Self-motivated and dependable with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility: Willingness to attend court and occasional evening or weekend outreach events.
Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time, salaried position with an annual salary range of $40,000–$45,000, commensurate with experience. Additional benefits are offered through Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services.
