Resident Director / Residential Life Director for High School Scholars Program

Job Description

Ridgefield A Better Chance (ABC) is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and highly organized Resident Director (RD) to provide supervision, mentorship, and leadership within a residential program supporting high school scholars. This role is ideal for a professional with experience in youth development, student support services, residential life, nonprofit leadership, or education, who is passionate about educational equity, diversity, and community building.

Please note that this position includes year-round private room and board, including housing, utilities, meals during the academic year, and related living expenses, valued at approximately $3,200 per month during the 10-month academic year (approximately $32,000 total value). Combined with the annual stipend beginning at $20,000, the total compensation package begins at approximately $52,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.

The Resident Director(s) may also maintain outside employment or remote work during school hours, provided it does not interfere with the responsibilities and schedule requirements of the role.

Ridgefield ABC will also consider a married couple serving as Co-Resident Directors.

The Resident Director is responsible for maintaining a safe, structured, and supportive home environment while fostering scholars’ academic success, emotional well-being, and personal growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily supervision, mentorship, and guidance to scholars in a residential setting
  • Build trusting relationships with adolescents and support their social-emotional development
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive living environment
  • Communicate effectively with families, host families, school personnel, and program leadership
  • Support scholars in academic accountability, time management, and life skills development
  • Assess situations thoughtfully and respond with sound judgment in both routine and high-pressure situations
  • Provide transportation support when needed using the RABC van
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and stakeholders to ensure program success
  • Respond to student needs, illness, or emergencies, including flexibility for remote work when appropriate

Schedule & Availability Requirements

  • The Resident Director is home Monday through Friday by 4:00 PM in time for dinner at 6:00 PM
  • On these days, the Resident Director/driver is responsible for the scholars when they arrive home from school
  • The Resident Director(s) is home on weekends and school holidays unless the scholars are with their Host Families or home
  • There is flexibility for working from home if a scholar is ill and cannot attend school (the Executive Director may also provide support in these situations)
  • The Resident Director(s) must remain on the premises until the last scholars have left for school

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with adolescents
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to assess situations thoughtfully
  • Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), including but not limited to race and gender identity
  • Highly organized with strong multitasking abilities and attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license and insurance required
  • Must be willing to transport scholars using the RABC van when necessary
  • Successful completion of a background check
  • Three professional references required

Additional Employment Note

The Resident Director(s) may hold full-time employment elsewhere during school hours as long as it has been pre-approved in the letter of understanding and provided that:

  • Such employment does not preclude carrying out the responsibilities listed above
  • The Resident Director(s) remains on the premises until the last scholars have left for school
