Assistant Maintenance Manager

Job Description

The Maintenance Manager oversees the day-to-day functions of mechanics, bus washers, utility workers and administrative staff members. Maintenance facilities typically operate on a three-shift basis to ensure that maintenance on equipment is completed; tests and inspections of products, services and processes to evaluate quality or performance of that equipment is accomplished; and specifications are met to DOT, client or company standards. This position is based in Hillburn, NY in supporting the Transport of Rockland contract.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and supervise maintenance staff

  • Ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks

  • Approve priority of maintenance and repairs based on availability of materials and parts and requirements of scheduled operations

  • Coordinate and oversee work performed by outside vendors

  • Ensure company and client equipment is maintained and operating efficiently

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, repairs and equipment history

  • Implement safety policies and procedures for the department per corporate requirements

  • Manage equipment, parts and supplies inventories

  • Participate in the development and administration of the operational budget

  • Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods

  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the maintenance department

  • Travel requirement outside of immediate area (5%):

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent: some college preferred

  • Valid CDL Class B (or higher) with passenger and airbrake endorsements preferred

  • 7 years+ experience in the repair and maintenance of alltypes of heavy-duty automotive and transit equipment

  • 3 years+ of supervisory experience

  • Broad understanding of all mechanical systems related to heavy-duty transportation vehicles

  • Familiarity with laws & regulations associated with the safe operation of maintenance facilities

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Must be able to work flexible hours or shifts as needed.

  • Subject to a DOT drug testing and physical if applicable. DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including cannabis, for any reason.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.

  • The employee is generally subjected to long periods spent sitting, typing, or looking at a computer screen.

  • Work environment will be a combination of both indoors and outdoors.

  • incumbent must be able to move about to the office and between floors; utilize standard office equipment;
  • Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, crouching, walking, lifting light and heavy objects, climbing ladders/stairs/ramps or scaffolding, and using tools and equipment that require a high degree of manual dexterity.
  • Required to sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle, feel, speak, hear, to reach with hands or arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell. Must be able to lay on back on a mechanic’s dolly to work underneath motor vehicle equipment.
  • Must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is performed with exposure to noise, chemicals, noxious odors, gases, poor ventilation, inclement weather, dirt, grease, dust, and machinery with moving parts requiring use of protective devices.
