Duties and Responsibilities
In this laboratory. the primary animal is Astyanax mexicanus, a small tetra native to Texas and Mexico in both epigean (surface-dwelling) and hypogean (cave-dwelling) forms. The ideal candidate has the experience to take care of Astyanax mexicanus, and will be expected to care for the fish and maintain their habitat through
daily upkeep. Duties include:
- Cleaning and maintenance of aquaria
- Basic animal care (feeding) and monitoring of health and behavior
- Assistance in breeding fish
- Maintenance and monitoring of equipment
- Maintenance and proper treatments for ill fish
- Behavior assay under the dietary treatments or drug treatment, which requires careful observation of fish health, feeding and maintenance of water chemistry.
- Behaivor analyses by using semi-automated analysis pipeline.
- bioinformatic analysis and quantitative analysis via combination of topological mapping and sparse modeling (some python& MatLab programmings)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology or related field.
0-1 years of experience in fish care.
Physical stamina is a must as some heavy lifting may be required.
Familiarity working with Microsoft Excel, R and/or Image analysis software (ImageJ, MatLab, etc).
Available to work 3 days per week at least, and about ? 3 hours/day on each working day.
Desirable Qualifications
Hobby of fish maintenance (freshwater/saltwater)
1+ years of experience with the experimental fish species, particularly, Astyanax mexicanus.
Advanced knowledge fish care and fish health (fresh water), behavior assay and its analysis.
