The Role
The Human Resources Generalist plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the HR department at Elmwood Village Charter Schools. This position is responsible for executing a wide range of HR functions, including recruitment and staffing, onboarding, benefits administration, employee relations, regulatory compliance, and maintaining accurate personnel records.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
Recruitment, Talent Acquisition & Onboarding
Manage the full-cycle recruitment, hiring, and onboarding process for instructional, administrative, and support staff (posting jobs, screening resumes, coordinating interviews, making offers, preparing offer letters, and providing a welcoming introduction to the EVCS work culture).
Partner with leaders and hiring managers to identify staffing needs and talent gaps.
Lead the onboarding process, ensuring all new hires complete required documentation, onboarding trainings, and background checks/fingerprinting clearance via the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
Conduct new hire orientations to introduce employees to EVCS culture, policies, and benefits.
Benefits & Compensation Administration
Coordinate open enrollment and administer employee benefits programs, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement plans (including coordination with the New York State Teachers' Retirement System - NYSTRS, if applicable).
Assist employees with benefits inquiries, open enrollment periods, form completion, and life event changes.
Oversee payroll processing and accurate tracking of hours, leaves of absence, paid time off (PTO), accurate deductions, and salary adjustments.
Compliance & Record Keeping
Maintain meticulous, confidential personnel files in compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as NYSED and charter authorizer requirements.
Track and audit employee certifications, licenses, and continuing education credits to ensure compliance with New York State teaching requirements.
Assist with annual reporting requirements (e.g., BEDS data, EEO-1, OSHA logs).
Employee Relations & Culture
Serve as a trusted point of contact for employee inquiries regarding school policies, procedures, and workplace concerns.
Promote a positive, inclusive school culture aligned with EVCS's core values of community, collaboration, and social justice.
Assist leadership with the annual performance evaluation process.
Training and Compliance
Organize annual required trainings and ensure employee completion (i.e. Title IX, Sexual Harassment, Workplace Violence/Safety)
Conduct investigations related to policy violations, grievances, or complaints in accordance with EVCS policies, and federal and state laws
Support managers with consistent application of corrective and disciplinary actions
Serve as the Civil Rights Compliance Officer (CRCO) and Title IX Coordinator
Collaborate with legal counsel to maintain the employee handbook annually
Serve as the primary liaison with legal counsel in personnel matters
Qualifications & Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field. Masters Degree highly valued.
Certification: PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certification highly preferred.
Experience: 3-5 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in a K-12 education setting, charter school, or non-profit organization.
Knowledge : Strong understanding of federal and New York State labor laws (FMLA, PFL, ADA, Workers' Comp), and Title IX.
Technology : Proficiency with HRIS platforms, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), Payroll systems, and Microsoft Office Suite / Google Workspace.
Discretion & Trust: Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information with the utmost integrity.
Collaboration: Exceptional interpersonal skills and a desire to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented school environment.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills.
