Safe Voices Domestic Violence Resource Center is seeking a dynamic and engaging individual to fill the full-time role of Staff Attorney. This is a new, grant funded position providing legal representation to survivors in Franklin County. While the office location can be flexible, including work from home options, regular travel to and work from Farmington is required.
The Staff Attorney provides holistic, trauma-informed legal representation and services to survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This is a newly established, grant funded position, where a central responsibility is to develop and expand access to legal representation for survivors. The attorney will offer consultation and direct representation to clients across a range of civil legal matters related to personal safety and long-term economic stability. This includes assisting survivors in obtaining Protection from Abuse Orders, consultations and representation in Family Matters cases. The Staff Attorney works closely with advocates to ensure survivors’ legal outcomes align with their safety goals. In addition to courtroom advocacy, the Staff Attorney will engage in outreach and education efforts to increase access to justice.
Primary Duties:
- Provide legal consultation and representation for survivors, with a focus on:
- Protection from Abuse (PFA) Orders
- Divorce
- Parental Rights and Responsibilities
- Other civil legal matters related to safety and economic security
- Work collaboratively with Safe Voices’ advocates to assess and determine the most appropriate legal services for each client
- Maintain client records and compile data for grant reporting and program evaluation
- Participate in team meetings, legal strategy sessions, and case reviews
- Stay current with best practices in trauma-informed legal services for domestic violence survivors
- Maintain Maine State Bar License and complete all required Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses
- Provide both formal and informal training to Safe Voices staff around legal proceedings
- Successfully complete Safe Voices’ Core Advocacy Training and other specialized training relevant to legal advocacy in the context of domestic violence
- Will support the grant planning phase by developing and reviewing key documents, policies, and procedures to build a strong foundation before providing legal representation for the program
Required Education & Qualifications:
- Active license to practice law in Maine, or currently in the process of obtaining Maine licensure
- Strong understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
- Commitment to trauma-informed, survivor-centered advocacy
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a legal team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Pass required background checks
- Ability to remain calm and effective in a fast-paced environment where safety is key
- Hold valid Maine driver’s license, reliable transportation and willingness to travel on occasion
- Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of the cultural and socioeconomic status of persons served
Pay & Benefits:
- Pay starts at $80,000 and increases based on experience
