Summary:

A Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Sonographer is a diagnostic ultrasound professional who is qualified to perform independent sonographic assessments of maternal-fetal conditions. A person in this role must be qualified by academic and clinical experience, along with professional credentialing which should include OB registry as well as the nuchal translucency/nasal bone certification (each must be acquired within one year of hire) and Fetal Echocardiography registry (must be acquired with 2 years of hire). Their responsibility is to provide diagnostic patient care services for routine and high-risk obstetrical cases using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. A MFM sonographer must have advanced knowledge in various fetal conditions and anomalies as well as, knowledge of contributing high-risk maternal factors. In addition, the scope of practice of the diagnostic MFM sonographer includes those procedures, acts, and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience. This person must demonstrate competency and must hold the appropriate ARDMS certification(s), which is the standard of practice in ultrasound.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician. Acquires and analyzes data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies. Meets examination components as defined by ultrasound department's Policy and Procedures regarding examination guidelines. - Uses independent judgment and systematic problem-solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care. Report's equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member. - Generates reports on the Viewpoint system), works with the attending physician to visualize sonographic examination on the OB view workstations. - Provides summary findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management. Prepares accurate and comprehensive preliminary reports and contacts referring physicians when required, according to established procedures. - Addresses patient care issues as they arise and makes decisions to appropriately resolve the problems. Coordinates with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided. - Recognizes and responds to emergencies, obtaining assistance from and/or referring to physicians when appropriate. - Responsible for protecting Personal Health Information (PHI) and maintaining compliance with WCs Privacy Policy. Uses the minimum PHI necessary when completing assignments. - Promotes, establishes, and maintains open and effective communications with all members of MFM. Serves as communication liaison between the reading physicians, patients, and ordering providers.

Other Information:

Current certification with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registered in OB or within one year of employment for new graduates. Current Registry in Fetal Echocardiography (FE) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or obtained within two years of employment. Current, or ability to obtain within 1 year: Fetal echocardiography certification within 2 years Basic Life Support Certification required as outlined by the American Heart Association and according to NL EMMC policy

Education

  • Required High School Diploma/General Educational Development (GED)- Graduate of accredited ultrasound program.
