Executive Director
Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive and servant leader of the Portland Promise Center (PPC), providing strategic vision, operational leadership, and community engagement to advance the organization’s mission. Reporting to the Board of Directors and accountable to the Board Chair, the Executive Director partners with staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders to strengthen programs, expand impact, and ensure organizational sustainability. This position is responsible for building strategic partnerships, leading program growth, and collaborating with the Board to develop strong funding and outreach strategies that support long-term success.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Community Engagement
· Build and sustain collaborative partnerships with churches, nonprofit organizations, corporations, government agencies, and educational institutions to advance PPC’s mission.
· Serve as an ambassador for the PPC through public speaking, community engagement, and written communications.
· Support the Preschool Director in external meetings related to early childhood education, public policy, funding advocacy, and institutional partnerships.
· Provide leadership to the staff of the PPC. Work with the Preschool Director to evaluate benefits, create policies in the handbook and ensure HR needs are being met for all employees.
· Organize and lead community-wide events such as the Easter egg hunt, community festivals, Thanksgiving meal, and other PPC events.
· Lead organizational strategic planning in partnership with the Board of Directors and the Preschool Director.
· Identify community needs and opportunities for expanded services and partnerships.
· Support board development by assisting with recruitment, engagement, and committee effectiveness.
Administration & Operations
· Provide executive oversight of organizational infrastructure, including facilities management, vendor contracts, utilities, landscaping, and building operations.
· Develop and manage the overall organizational budget in compliance with nonprofit financial and reporting standards, in partnership with the Preschool Director for preschool-specific budget planning.
· Ensure sound financial management and appropriate documentation for tax-exempt status.
· Prepare materials and facilitate effective board meetings in collaboration with the Board Chair.
· Establish and maintain organizational policies, procedures, and administrative systems that support efficiency, accountability and long-term sustainability.
Fundraising & Development
· Partner with the Fund Development Committee to design and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy.
· Cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and community partners.
· Identify funding opportunities, prepare grant proposals, and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
· Develop donor recognition and stewardship programs to foster long-term support.
· Create and implement marketing and communications strategies to engage current and prospective supporters.
· Evaluate, plan, and support fundraising events in collaboration with staff and volunteers.
Qualifications
· Demonstrated experience in nonprofit leadership, administration, fundraising, and program management.
· Strong skills in public speaking, relationship-building, strategic planning, and team leadership.
· Proven ability to recruit, manage, and inspire staff and volunteers.
· Experience with grant writing and donor development preferred.
· Commitment to serving families in the West End through programs such as Early Childhood Education and VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).
· Bachelor’s degree preferred; relevant experience may substitute.
