Department Information

The Jordan Lab is seeking a part time research assistant to join our team of dynamic researchers led by Dr. Evan Jordan.

Our research has 4 focus areas:

• The experience of stress as it happens in free-living conditions in the built and natural environment.
• Measurement of stress particularly through custom built mobile phone apps and commercially available wearable technology.
• Spatiotemporal analysis of individuals' usual environment and stressor experiences.
• The role of stress and environment in healthy aging and diseases like Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and cancer.

Our research methodologies allow us to better understand how stress is experienced in space and time, connecting stress and related health outcomes to the places we live, work, and play. In particular, we are able to measure exogenous and behavioral factors shown in the figure below, developed by the Office of Neural Exposome and Toxicology (ONETOX) at the National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke.

The focus of Dr. Jordan's program of research is the role of the neural exposome, specifically environmental stress, in healthy aging and neurological disorders. He utilizes mobile and wearable technology to better understand stress as it is experienced in free living conditions. His lab has developed several mobile apps focused on measuring stress as it happens in real time through ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and intervening on stress as it occurs through just in time adaptive interventions (JITAI). In his research, he utilizes a variety of wearable devices including smartwatches, smart rings, and fitness trackers to measure additional variables of interest such as heart rate, heart rate variability, physical activity, and sleep. His research is funded by multiple institutes at the National Institute of Health (NIH) including the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) as well as the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

Dr. Jordan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Wellness Design in the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington. He also serves as the Associate Chair of Strategic Initiatives. He has an adjunct appointment in the Indiana University Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, is an Affiliate Scientist in the Regenstrief Institute Center for Health Services Research and is an Affiliate Faculty in the Indiana University Center for Global Health.

Job Summary

• Assists in the conduct of clinical research studies or trials following established protocols and standard operating procedures; prepares and organizes space; sets up study-related equipment and supplies.

• Sets up and monitors various research study protocols, such as data collection efforts.

• Assists with routine data collection to support clinical research.

• Schedules/calls subjects for appointments as directed; obtains screening information via phone or in person from script template for minimal risk studies; records and maintains screening/enrollment/master subject logs.

• Ensures proper recording and archival of all regulatory documents, including informed consent forms for submission to regulatory agencies, files all appropriate correspondence

• Provides other various support for clinical research efforts (makes copies, prepares transmittal sheets for mailings, sends out various resources/information).

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

• 1 year patient-related or clinical research experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Preferred

• Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting program

Working Conditions / Demands

The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
