Department Information

The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research (Wells Center) conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 300 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.

With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

Job Summary

The role involves applying a range of experimental techniques to investigate biological processes and disease mechanisms. Key approaches used in this role include high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the analysis of lipids and amino acids, molecular assays to evaluate gene expression and cell signaling pathways, and the use of mutant mouse models and patient plasma samples to support translational research.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Performs research, including bench and mouse experiments, data analyses, and related activities.
• Orders supplies.
• Maintains equipment.
• Maintains mouse colonies.
• Prepares manuscripts.
• Presents data.
• Attends research meetings and seminars.

General Responsibilities

• Performs moderately complex experiments while following research techniques and procedures.
• Develops procedures and protocols in collaboration with leadership.
• Prepares research reports or analyses for projects.
• Maintains safety records and ensures safety/compliance procedures and protocols are followed.
• May provide guidance and support to junior-level staff in laboratory operations.

Qualifications

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree in a related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

• Some related work experience.
• Experience operating HPLC systems.

• Expertise in areas such as mouse models of disease, flow cytometry, molecular biology, cell culture, or omics data analysis is highly desirable.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$43,000.00 - 48,000.00 annually based on a combination of experience, skill level, education, and training.
