Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Interacts with researchers and clinicians to identify and request glass slides of specific patient cohorts.
- Handles and scans glass tissue slides using digital pathology scanners.
- Performs image data management.
- Uses in-house software infrastructure to document and quality control (QC) all digitized slides.
- Utilizes graphical user interface tools to identify and tag images and manage large datasets with a focus on accuracy and organization.
- Prioritizes healthcare data standards.
- Demonstrates familiarity with healthcare data standards, ensuring compliance and care in handling sensitive information.
- Performs Honest Broker responsibilities for clinical research studies.
- Confirms research compliance documents are obtained prior to initiating scanning activities (using a principal investigator (PI) provided checklist or intake process).
General Responsibilities
- Receives specimens and verifies that all required documentation is present.
- Enters required information into the computer systems and logs cases.
- Files tissue blocks and specimen slides following established system.
- Stores tissue specimens ensuring proper preservation procedures have been followed.
- Maintains specimen files to ensure a timely and complete retrieval process.
- Prepares tissue specimens and reagents for paraffin sectioning, frozen sections, or other appropriate methods for diagnostic, teaching, and research.
- Prepares human tissue, animal tissue, and reagents for microtomy which involves fixation, dehydration, processing, embedding, and machine maintenance.
- Organizes and stores fixed and frozen tissue.
- Follows guidelines and standard operating procedures in accordance with compliance and quality control measures.
- Maintains up to date with required training and compliance measures.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
- Some experience in a related field.

- Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
- Demonstrates a high commitment to quality.

Working Conditions / Demands
The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
