Special Education Behavior Support Paraprofessional– Middle School

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the administrator, the behavior support staff is responsible for providing support to grades 6-8.

Qualifications:

Required:

1.Possess an associate’s (or higher) degree or completed two years of study at an institution of higher education or completed ETS Parapro Assessment. This is within the guidelines for the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

2.Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and proven organizational skills

3.Demonstrated success as a collaborator and proven team player

4.Demonstrated successful communication skills with students, staff, parents and community

5.Ability to maintain composure, even temperament, and support during high-tension situations

6.Ability to think quickly and respond under pressure

7.Willingness and ability to intervene calmly with students who are behaviorally escalated and/or aggressive

8.History of positive interactions with students

9.Willing to be trained in crisis intervention strategies and use physical redirections and interventions as a last resort

Desired Characteristics:

  • Previous experience working with children with behavioral needs
  • Experience working with aggressive and escalated students
  • Experience working with behavioral teaching strategies and replacement behaviors

Duties:

  • Prioritize and assist middle school students in school environment who need additional behavioral support
  • Support educational/behavioral objectives as given by the teacher/staff
  • Maintain student self-respect, information, and confidentiality
  • Work independently and cooperatively with administrators and teachers
  • Provides individual assistance to behaviorally escalated students
  • Ability to plan and organize; proactive in preventing behavior issues; good work habits
  • Willing to attend conferences and participate in professional development
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the administration
