Mercyhurst University invites applications for a full-time position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Biological Anthropology. The successful candidate will be able to apply for a tenure-track position in 2027-28. The one-year position begins in August 2026 and will be housed within the Department of Anthropology and World Languages. In accordance with Mercyhurst’s traditional emphasis on excellent teaching, the applicant will be expected to instruct introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses in biological anthropology, paleoanthropology, human osteology, human skeletal biology, zooarchaeology, and related subjects. The ideal candidate will be willing to work productively and collegially with faculty, staff, and students in the Applied Forensic Science and Biology programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will participate in undergraduate recruitment activities and provide service to the department, school and university. Research experience and a commitment to undergraduate student research supervision are expected. Standard contracts at the university run 9 months (August 15-May 15) with a 24-credit-hour teaching load.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Anthropology, and teaching experience, as well as

• Expertise in areas that complement or expand the existing strengths of the program.

• A history of mentoring undergraduate students in research and professional development.

• Experience with laboratory instruction, course development, and using innovative, student-centered pedagogies.

• A demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

Note: Skill in GIS is a plus. Qualified ABD candidates will be considered.
